RE: about Rabbi Elozor Eliezer Lipa Gartenhaus

Sorry for taking to long to respond, alas I have been very busy lately. I started using GenoPro for my genealogy research, but recently (last 2 years or so) I have just been dealing with emails without using any other software.

Reuven Chaim,

I don't know anything about the second wife of Rabbi Eliezer Lipa Gartenhaus, except that she is mentioned in a story in the introduction to the sefer (not by name). You may want to contact my cousin, Rabbi Yitzchok Meir Gartenhaus, a grandson of the Mechaber, at 718-627-1330.

I took a quick look at your family tree. Though a software developer by profession and somewhat of a "genealogy enthusiast", I'll confess that I know very little about genealogy software. I starting reading the stuff at gensoftsb.com, but I could really use some more advice. I would like to make a sensible investment in a program that is likely to continue to be supported and is adaptable to various formats.

Hatzlacha,

Eli

Family tree relationship?

I apologize for taking so long to respond, but alas I have been very busy. I am related to a Mordechai Steg from Boro Park through his mother, the late Mrs. Faigey Steg nee Klein who was my paternal grandfather's sister. I do not know much about this Steg family, but I will G-d willingly see my Steg cousin this week and will ask him.

My mother's maiden name is "Steg", descending from R. Yeruham Fischel Steg who married the great-great granddaughter of the Taz. We are also distant cousins of Mordechai Steg of France

I noted on your genealogy tree mention of these families. Are you aware of any such relationships?

Dear Reuven,

My name is Eric Friedman and i live in Washington DC. I am looking for any records or evidence of my extended family the Hollanders, who I believe lived in the Mukacheve area up until World War II. Avraham Yosef Chaim Hollander was born in 1874 in Kivyazhd Ukraine (then was Kovesd, Bereg County, Hungary), which now I believe is very close to the town of Kam'jan'ske, which is about 30 km SE from Mukacheve. His father was Ariel Zvi Hollander, and grandfather was Zev Meyer Hollander. Father of Zev Meyer was Binyamin Hollander.

Do you know of these people, and if so, do you know where Jewish records would have been kept and could be found today? I'd deeply appreciate any help you might be able to provide. Thanks!

Hi,

I just came across your website(s) and was fascinated by the family trees there. I located my wife's brother, Yitzchok Yehoshua Klein, his wife Yehudit and their family. In 1996, we traveled to Israel for the wedding where we had the pleasure of meeting the Rotenbergs and the Katzes.
Currently they have four children: Yaffa (full name Yaffa Shaindel), Rachel Leah, Batsheva, and Shalom Shachna. I don't know if you're interested in the full genealogy of all those who married into the Richler family, but Yitzchok Yehoshua's own ancestral roots are quite impressive. [The same goes for Gittel Avigail Scher Hirsch, a childhood friend of my mother]. As far as the Edel family, I have a book on genealogy called "Eshel HaGedolim", by E.
L. Gartenhaus, (NYC, 1958) given to me by my late aunt, who was Gartenhaus'
daughter-in-law. There may some info there you can use.

I have a sefer at home from Rabbi Elozor Eliezer Lipa Gartenhaus printed in
1958 which was signed by the rabbi to my grandfather. I know that he has some connection to my family because he was married to a descendant of the Shenos Chaim in his second marriage, but do you have any more information on him or his family or works?

Also, I noticed that you had the lastname "Moldaver" on your list of family members, my Rebbe is named Rabbi Moshe Yosef Moldaver, and he's from Toronto.

The relatives who are asking me about this are related to a Messinger, a name which I saw listed on your family tree. I am going to ask them for some names from their family tree.
In addition, my husband's grandmother's sister (would that be his great aunt?) Anna Pomerantz (I think maybe her Jewish name was Henia) was married to a Weissblum.
And, again there is that comment that these people (many of whom are not aware of these things) mentioned that they recall being told that we are related to the Rema.

I am the genealogist of our family. Pomerantz familiy members have requested me to look into it a possible connection with Rav Moshe Isserles.
My husband has Weissblum cousins and one relative (Blau, nee Leidner) tells me that these Weissblums descend from R. Elimelech of Lizensk. Some other family members mentioned that they have heard that their family is descended from a "Rabbi Isserles", as they put it.
If you have information about the two surnames ISSERLES and WEISSBLUM that you can share with me, perhaps I can determine if what they think is true.

For quite some time now, I have known that my gggg-grandfather, Rabbi
Binyamin Eliezer Ungar-Auerbach of Krakow (father of Rabbi Reuven Chaim
Klein wrote the Shenos Chaim) married the daughter of Rabbi Ya'akov HaLevi
from Wolbrom. Rav Ya'akov HaLevi was the brother of Rav Yosef Lichtig/Charif
HaLevi. The brothers were in turn sons of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch HaLevi, who was
a direct male descendant of Rabbi Dovid Segal HaLevi, the TaZ (Turei Zahav).
For some time I have been looking for the exact line of connection between
Rav Tzvi Hirsch HaLevi and his direct male ansector the TaZ. I have yet to
get the exact line of lineage. However, I recently found out that the
Maharsha (who lived in the same era as the TaZ and was also a Levi) had a
son-in-law named Rabbi Yitzchack Segal Charif HaLevi. I was wondering if
this son-in-law of the Maharsha had anything to do with the line which I am

My earliest traceable direct anscetor was Binyamin Eliezer Ungar-Auerbach
who was on the Bais Din of Wolbrom, but I know nothing beyond him. His son,
my ggg-grandfather, changed the last name to KLEIN, his name was R' Reuven
Chaim Klein and he wrote the sefer Shenos Chaim.

I apologize for taking so long to reply, I dorm in Yeshiva and I come home approximately once a month. First off, I'm not a Rav, I'm just a kid. My father's email address is 'mikeklein18@gmail.com'. I'm happy to get in touch with such a close relative who has been so far.

Dear Rav Rachak,

You don't know me (yet) but your parents certainly do.

Some 28 years ago I had the good fortune of marrying a wonderful person named Susie. Her last name at that time was Mermelstein.

If you haven't put the puzzle together yet, that means we are cousins, as she is the youngest daughter of ybc'l Rav Mordechai Mermelstein z'l - who was a brother to your grandfather (all children of Rav Shloma z'l)

I am very sorry our families have been so 'out of touch' - we really need to reconnect.

Let's start with the basics.. does your dad have an email address?

Can you send me your home phone number so I can call and say HI?

Please send me love to your folks and if you send me your number, I'll be happy to surprise them with a phone call.

All the Best,
Shloime

Attached is my latest updated family tree (descendants of Shlomo Mermelstein) as a Word document.  If you have any corrections or additions, please send them to me.

Uncle Rudy's grandson created a much more elaborate family tree - go to http://www.myhomeloancompany.com/kleins/ and select the 2nd choice Family Tree (in Enhanced Metafile Format) to view it.
